About the Event

Workshop leader Gary White, a native of Nashville, received his Bachelors of Fine Arts at Watkins College of Art and Design in 2011 and is currently pursuing his MFA at UTK. His works have been included in solo shows and group exhibitions throughout the country, and are inspired by the rich complex history of the American South, from the perspective of a multi-ethnic southern experience. A category of which he has termed the “Other”. His work pays homage to the past and celebrates the present. He gathers inspiration from histories, life ways, Ancestors, tribal traditions, folklore, and religious practices to create hybrid archetypes.

The workshop will not only allow your creativity to blossom, but will also strengthen the goal of the Bottom Knoxville in Building community and in maintaining and holding Cultural space. A community Quilting Bee (quilting the

quilt together) will take place after the individual blocks have been pieced together.

Participants will:

-Create Eight 8 1/2 X 8 1/2 blocks using strips of fabric to complete each block.

-Learn the history and cultural importance of the string quilt piecing technique.

-Be able to continue making string quilt blocks independently, thus carrying on the tradition of string

quilts into the 21 st century.
