About the Event

Nature is a character in our lives, no matter where we live. It is so much more than writing about roiling hills and picturesque lake fronts. It is the resilience of weeds forcing themselves through the concrete or in the bird making its home above the light fixture on your porch.

In this generative workshop, we will explore poetry through a Black poetic lens, which often addresses the historical context nature carries for many BIPOC communities. This will allow us to incorporate nature in more ways than just voyeurism. We will see how we can use the weather, animals, and plants, alongside personal associations, to create depth in our poetry and provide connection between our lived experience and the natural world.
