Patch-wood Piecing and a Bedtime Story by Jennifer Simon
"This exhibit can be seen as a departure from previous works that placed Black figures within landscapes or historical and political contexts. At the same time, it reflects an ongoing concern in my practice: the reduction of imagery to basic lines and shapes, a simplified color palette, and the use of repetition through the format of the quilt block. There is a family tradition of quilt-making that I continue, both through the making of actual quilts and through the piecing and fitting of fabric and/or paper to create collage and mixed-media paintings.
In this show, you’ll see wooden blocks based on traditional quilt patterns that have been used since the 19th century, when quilt-making in America became both a craft and an art form, alongside the basic utilitarian need to stay warm. The smaller the fabric pieces, the more…
